Dress Well, Test Well

constantly have Christmas songs stuck in my head and Christmas cookies on my mind at this point in the semester. There’s nothing more I would love than to be sipping on hot chocolate and watching Christmas movies with my roommates all day long, but instead I’m stuck in the library until 2 am studying for finals. Womp.

With finals week upon us it’s so easy to fall into the trap of leggings, big sweaters, and messy buns for long nights of studying. But this finals week, I encourage you all to remember the “dress well, test well” mantra I’m sure you’ve heard before. It’s no secret that when you look good, you feel good. If you’re wearing an outfit that you love and feel comfortable and confident in, you’ll have your head held high as you walk into your final. If the confidence stemming from your style can help you score even 1% higher on your test, then it was definitely worth leaving the groutfit at home.

I’m not saying you need to wear a ball gown to your 8 am final. No way. But before you throw on that oversized sweatshirt and sneakers, think about how you want to feel when you take your final. If you need an extra boost of confidence heading into a final, try incorporating some of these styles into your finals day looks.

Jeans, Jeans, Jeans

I love leggings as much as the next girl, but wearing jeans to take a final will keep you upright and thinking straight. As much as we all love that elastic waistband, it can be really easy to slump down in your seat and rest your head in your hand when you’re in a cozy outfit. Before you know it your head is on your desk, you’re fast asleep, and your professor is tapping on your shoulder. How awkward. So do yourself a favor and put on your comfiest pair of jeans before you take a final.

Dresses

When you want to dress up but still be reasonably comfy, sweater dresses and swing dresses are always a great option! There’s a million ways to style a casual dress. For finals this winter I would suggest long sleeves since it’s frigid AF these days. Add a cozy cardigan, vest, scarf, or flannel…whatever you’re feeling. You’ll be comfortable in your own clothes and you’ll be confident to ace your final because you’ll look your best!

A Few of My Favorite Things

We’ve all got a few things in our closet that we absolutely love to wear. Whether it’s vest, scarf, or a jacket – wear it to your final! A little positive juju from your favorite clothes can only help.

Hair Up

I have long hair and I let it distract me way too often. Sometimes I’ll be taking a test and before I know it I’m playing with my hair and staring out into open space. When I take a test I like to have mine up and out of my face, but if I put it in a messy bun I’m reaching borderline bum status. A perfect in between hair style for finals is the classic half-up-half-down, but with a messy bun instead. It’s the perfect happy medium for hair that doesn’t take a lot of effort, but looks like it does.

Touch of Makeup

It’s amazing what a difference a little mascara can make and that holds true with dressing well for your finals. If wearing a little bit of makeup will help you feel more confident, add a little bit before you leave for your final. You don’t need to spend 30 minutes in front of an entire YouTube makeup tutorial, ain’t nobody got time for that. But if a little mascara and a swipe of eyeliner will help you rock your finals, then by all means, throw on a little face makeup.

Statement Pieces

If you’ve been reading this and thinking to yourself, “no way you’re going to talk me out of wearing a sweater and leggings to my final”, I’ve got one more idea for you. A sweater and leggings outfit can be totally turned around by a statement necklace. When I want to wear a sweater and leggings, I also add my comfy riding boots and a statement necklace to my outfit and I immediately feel fancier. If you’ve got a necklace you adore, wear it with your sweater to your final. It might just give you that extra boost you need. I would, however, avoid wearing any wrist jewelry. Taking a written final with lots of bracelets clinking around can be very distracting and uncomfortable.

Caffeine, Please

If it was up to me, I would have an IV of coffee constantly flowing through my veins…especially during finals week. Now that you’ve got your perfect outfit down, pick up a coffee on the way to your final. There’s something about coffee that just makes me feel like I can do just about anything, and that’s exactly what you need before taking a final!

As you’re buried in your papers, tests, and group projects this week, don’t forget to come up for air! Eat healthy, sleep as much as you can, and do your best to keep your stress to a minimum. You’re going to completely rock your finals and it’s going to feel so great when they’re all over!

Good luck & happy studying!
