How I’m Making the NYFW Trends Work for Me

A s I sit here writing this post, I’m typing it up at my desk in my duplex in my college town in middle America. To me, more often than not, it feels like one of the farthest places in the world from NYC’s bustling streets. Some days, I’ll type “New York City” into my Instagram search bar so I can wistfully browse the current posts coming out of NYC that day. It makes me feel in some strange way, just a bit closer to the city that inspires me so much.

While this year didn’t necessarily bring me to the streets of New York during Fashion Week, I was obsessively glued to my computer watching livestreams, reading articles, and viewing photo galleries of all the NYFW coverage this season. Who cares if I had an Economics class? There was an Altuzarra runway show to watch! Some days, I even sneakily multitasked from my classroom’s desk, because taking lecture notes can’t really compare to watching models glide down the runways.

There were so many incredible shows and presentations that I could only dream to be at in person one day, but for now the live streams will have to do! Coming out of NYFW, I want to bring my favorite looks from the runways into my everyday life and outfits!

As a college student with, well, a college student’s budget, I wasn’t sure how easy this task would be. However, upon looking at trends from certain shows, most of them featured looks, while they are outside the box, can be pulled from things you most likely already have in your closet. This week at my University, I have two career fairs to attend, and I already know that I’ll be planning out outfits with a nod to looks featured at NYFW! Let me show you a few of my ideas!

  • J.Crew’s collection showed me that a classic look never goes out of style. With a twist on the denim trend that’s currently having a moment, J.Crew emphasized a classic look with denim as a key player that was incorporated in a majority of the looks. Who says denim on denim can’t be chic? I for one, am obsessed. Whether it’s an outfit entirely of denim, or simply an accent here or there, this show was a huge inspiration for me!

  • The next show that I absolutely love was the collection that Jenny Packham showed. This collection really stood out to me because her inspiration for this line was “31 Looks Inspired By 31 Stylish Women.” There wasn’t really a factor of cohesive looks when the models walked down the runway, but it was all brought together by the fact that all the garments were inspired by stylish women in leadership around the world. This was an absolutely amazing thing to see, and while I loved the garments, I drew more inspiration from the concept behind the line. Why don’t I look to more famous women I’m inspired by for stylish looks? From Jennifer Lawrence to Frida Khalo, Packham’s collection was a nod to so many great women of today and the past! I’m so happy to see so many girl bosses being represented at Fashion Week!

  • Finally, Rag & Bone’s show gave me some inspiration that every day doesn’t have to be a dress-up day. Some of their looks that came down the runway celebrated the current athleisure and ultra-casual styles. Even still, they showcased several monochromatic looks that actually worked amazingly. In the past, I have never had the confidence to try a monochromatic look, but after watching Rag & Bone’s show, I think I just might have to give it a try sometime soon!
